What is the Reading Zone program?
The Reading Zone reading program provides supplemental reading support in Kindergarten through fifth grades at the elementary level to assist students in meeting the district and state reading standards. Certified teachers provide research-based strategies to small groups of students to increase reading skills.
How do students qualify for the Reading Zone program?
What curriculum is used in the Reading Zone program?
All elementary schools in the Issaquah School District use the Reading Explorers Benchmark Enrichment Company curriculum in the Reading Zone program. This research-based curriculum includes both fiction and non-fiction texts, making it rich in children’s literature. The lessons focus on comprehension strategies, as well as include phonics skill-building, writing, and word working activities.
In Kindergarten, students use the Start-Up program. This program: · Builds a foundation for successful phonemic awareness and phonics instruction · Explicitly teaches short vowels and consonants · Supports and motivates all learners
In 1st through 5th grades, students will use the Build-Up, Pathfinders and Reading Trailblazers program (depending on their skill levels). These programs: · Provide support in listening skills, reading comprehension, reading fluency and phonetic awareness · Allow students a positive reading experience · Emphasize comprehension strategies, multiple writing types, and reading for meaning and fluency · Encourage practice using higher order thinking skills to problem solve · Build confidence and improve classroom performance
