Reading - We are using the District Reading Program designed by McGraw-Hill. Components of this program include fiction, nonfiction, decodable literature, leveled books (independent reading for every student), direct instruction in phonics, grammar, vocabulary building, and a reading and writing connection. In addition to our reading program we will also read from our I Can Read Notebooks. The notebooks will contain songs and poems we have practiced in class. Students will also read a variety of stories in addition to the stories read in the McGraw-Hill program. We will be testing the students weekly for
sight word recognition.
Your child can also practice his or her phonics skills by reading the words we work on in our stories during the week. The Accelerated Reader program will be implemented into your child's program as soon as he or she is ready for it. The BEL reading program will also be provided to those children who qualify. The Benchmark Enrichment Learning program assists K-3 students reading below grade level with small group instruction to strengthen reading skills.
